Don't be alarmed. You may remember that Tangents & Sidebars is a random episode here on The Fully Mindful where my friend and fellow podcaster Debbie Harrell from The New World Normal get together LIVE for a truly random conversation. Well, not totally random. We do actually plan some areas of meaningful exploration. But, in true Debbie + Melissa fashion, we are also a bit ADD, so we wander a bit. And here's not different as we start off with a riveting conversation on....glasses and aging!

But we really do get to some meaningful stuff here: Gratitude and Authenticity.

As November rolls in, gratitude takes center stage, but is all thankfulness created equal? We explore the nuances between genuine gratitude and the performative gestures often seen on social media. Debbie and I reflect on the emotional complexity of gratitude coexisting with anxiety and challenge the notion of these emotions being mutually exclusive. Through heartfelt dialogue, we discuss the importance of authenticity and recognize privilege's role in personal growth. From navigating systemic biases to fostering true connections in the personal development space, this conversation promises insights and reflections that resonate well beyond any single season.

Imagine being at the pinnacle of your legal career, only to find yourself yearning for a path that truly speaks to your soul. That's exactly what Shari Lane experienced as she transitioned from employment lawyer to crafting compelling narratives. Join us to discover how a health scare and a therapist's guidance prompted Shari to leave behind her lawyer identity to pursue a writing career that embraces the themes of empathy and connection. Through her story, we explore the personal struggles many face in redefining what success really is and finding fulfillment in letting go of who we thought we were or were “supposed” to be, for who we really are.

Our conversation takes us to Lopez Island, off the coast of Washington state, where Shari and her husband planted their roots after letting go of big law and big expectations in Portland, Oregon. There, they’ve created a unique work-life balance, and found a community that supports and even natures this balance.. By attending to both their professional duties and creative passions like writing and music, they've crafted a lifestyle that prioritizes personal well-being and artistic expression. This episode peels back the layers of their journey, from building a life on Lopez Island, and the challenges of writing Shari’s newest book, "Two Over Easy All Day Long." It’s a powerful testament to resilience, showcasing how embracing creativity can lead to a more meaningful life beyond conventional benchmarks of achievement.

We delve into the power of storytelling as a tool for empathy and connection. Shari shares insights into her creative process, drawing inspiration from real-life events and exploring themes of privilege, redemption, and understanding. Listen as we discuss the narrative depth of her characters, from a privileged New Yorker naigating life in rural Oregon to the enduring spirit of a small-town diner owner. Through their stories, we explore how literature can bridge societal divides and encourage us to view the world through a lens of compassion. This episode invites you to witness the transformative potential of personal storytelling and the universal bonds it creates

What if the key to unity lies in listening, not agreeing? In this new solo series, which I'm calling "Brain Buzz," I am exploring the surprising insights from studies that reveal how perception gaps deceive us into thinking we're more divided than we truly are. Join me here as we uncover compelling, fascinating research from organizations like More in Common and a Stanford study that surprised everyone, including the researchers. I'm diving into how we belong--and connect--any time, but especially now when the world feels so polarized.

I also  lead you on a short, science-backed exercise on heart coherence and belonging inspired by the work of Kimberly Snyder and the HeartMath Institute. This practice invites you to cultivate a sense of belonging in your daily life through coherence breathing and connecting with your heart space and evoking a feeling of belonging. Whether navigating interpersonal dynamics at work, within your community, or at home, this exercise provides a powerful tool to foster the connections we all crave. In a time of heightened division, join me in embracing authenticity and the beauty of showing up as our true selves, finding belonging in the most unexpected places.

Here's the link to The Happiness Lab podcast episode which details  the connection studies mentioned today.

Here's the link to Kimberly Snyder's work. She does some amazing heart coherence work, and has a new book out, The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts, which is really great!

And here's the HeartMath Institute which has soooooooo much good and free and worthwhile content.

What if your personal trauma could be the key to unlocking a more profound, humanistic approach to therapy? Join me as I sit down with Gina Gratza, a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in trauma, eating disorders, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Gina opens up about her journey from a preteen with emotional struggles to a seasoned therapist who integrates her sensitivity and depth into her practice. Discover how her dedication to authenticity and ongoing personal therapy has shaped her unique therapeutic approach, breaking away from traditional scripts to foster genuine connections with her clients.

Discover the transformative power of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, where we explore the multiple parts that make up our internal landscape. Gina guides us through the concept of self-energy and the eight Cs—calm, confidence, curiosity, courage, calmness, creativity, and care—that are pivotal in achieving a balanced and self-regulated life. We challenge the misconception that self-compassion equates to weakness, especially among high-achieving professionals, and stress its critical role in trauma healing. By understanding and integrating our internal parts, we can nurture a more harmonious internal dialogue and overall well-being.

In our exploration of somatic therapies, Gina sheds light on the unique approaches of EMDR and other somatic practices that help release deep-seated emotional and physical tensions. Learn how these methods enhance one's capacity to tolerate discomfort and build self-trust. Additionally, we discuss the growing acceptance of psychedelic-assisted therapy, particularly MDMA for PTSD, and the importance of community and emotional processing in the healing journey. Reflect with us on these compelling conversations and the potential for future collaborations, as we express our gratitude for the opportunity to share and learn from Gina's invaluable insights.

Even though the calendar reads "June,", it was a rainy and cold day here in the Pacific Northwest--one of those days you just want to hunker down with a good book, a cozy blanket and a hot cup of tea.

I had a lot on the schedule today, and it turned out, life/the universe had other plans for me today. I was feeling a little bit sorry for myself that "everything" got cancelled.  And then I saw a post by author and social scientist, Arthur C. Brooks (the happiness guy) about starting the story over.

And I was reminded that we can be with what is, and accept it, without giving in or giving up. Just be with it. And recognize it's just part of the story today. And then story keeps moving forward. New pages. New characters. New trials and tribulations. New joys.

In other words, all of it is what it is.

And that's the beauty of it.

And it's the focus of today's mindfulness practice. We practice to practice. Looking forward to practicing with you.
