Active Travel Adventures

Looking for a FUN adventure for your next vacation? Active Travel Adventures curates multi-day world wide adventure travel holidays for reasonably fit folks who love to hike, bike, paddle or otherwise stay active for a more immersive experience when they vacation and explore our planet and its people. These are all adventures that YOU can do, especially if you train (I'm 64, so if I can do it, so can YOU!). It's easy to find the right adventure for you: We cover mild adventures like cycling (flat) the historic and beautiful Netherlands, to taking an African safari, to taking a walking holiday from one medieval village to the next in Europe. And if you are up for a bigger challenge, then check out climbing Kilimanjaro, trekking to Everest Base Camp or Annapurna in Nepal's majestic Himalayan mountains, or hiking the Mont Blanc circuit through Italy, France and Switzerland. But most adventures we cover are rated a 3 out of 5 for difficulty. Examples include (eBikes available) cycling Greek islands or island hopping from Split to Dubrovnik in Croatia (both while sleeping on a cool ship!), hiking in Banff, the Dolomites, Patagonia, or trekking to Machu Picchu. Long distance hikes we cover include the Coast to Coast and Cotswold Way in England, the West Highland Way in Scotland and other famous UK trails. Of course, we often cover doing an El Camino, including the French Way (Camino Frances), the Portuguese Way, the Primitivo, the original way from Oviedo. We've even BIKED the El Camino! We have also walked the Camino's sister trail, the Kumano Koda trail in Japan. If you like the water and to paddle, we've rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon (and we've hiked the Grand Canyon, too!) as well as through Canyonlands National Park. We've rafted the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, as well as day trips as part of other trips on the Pacuare River in Costa Rica and the Tulley River in Australia. We've also snorkeled the Galapagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef! Naturally, we cover the amazing National Parks, including Olympic, Acadia, the Grand Canyon, Arches, Zion, Arches, Rocky Mountains and more! Sometimes we even travel on horseback, including in Iceland, Ireland and other exciting destinations! Often the trips are multi-activity, like the ones in New Zealand, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Costa Rica. On multi-activity trips, we mostly hike, but we usually do some biking and paddling as well. Sometimes we go on expedition cruises, like to Antarctica, the Falkland and South Georgia islands or to Greenland. Here we hike and get to paddle among the icebergs, while traveling on a small ship for closer access to the amazing landscape! On occasion we backpack and camp, but mostly we day hike and stay in comfortable inns at night. We have backpacked St Olav Ways in Norway, the Kungsleden trail in Sweden, in Iceland and Greenland, as well as section hiked the Appalachian Trail, or 'AT'. We visit exotic countries like Bhutan, Vietnam and Thailand. In short, we cover the world's most exciting adventures that regular people can do on their vacation. Sometimes, we cover skills that you need in order to go on an adventure, from traveling solo, how to choose a tour company, how to save money for travel, how to save money ON travel, and outdoor skills you need to learn (also check out our sister podcast, the Adventure Travel Show podcast (ATSP) for deep dives into adventure skills). ATA's mission is to inspire and empower you to lead a bigger life through adventure travel. Travel the Active Travel Adventures way! Be sure to visit the ActiveTravelAdventures.com website where we make it easy to find the right adventure for you! You can search by time of year you can travel, what activity you want to do and which continent you want to visit. Learning about all the outdoor skills from ATSP are available to check out there as well. We aim to be your one stop shop for adventure travel! One the website, you can see photos and videos of the adventure covered, plus get more information about the trip covered. 8 Day Boat and Bike Tour of Provence - Carmargue France

Today we head to one of the most beautiful and popular regions of France, yet away from the busy crowds in the south of France.

We are heading to Provence and the Camargue region, on an 8 day boat and bike tour where we will visit fortresses and Roman ruins, enjoy local wines and cycle past vineyards, orchards  and one of the most important wetlands in the world - all with just unpacking ONCE, since you'll be transported by boat between stops!

Birders will see many of the more tha 400 species that visit this area, including the charming flamingos  with their comical upside down heads in the marsh as they search for brine shrimp.

You’ll see the best preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe and explore two of my favorite French towns:  Avignon and Arles.

As we cycle along the quiet paths, we’ll encounter wild horses and Carmargue cattle.  We’ll explore the landscapes made famous by Van Gogh and Cézanne.  Along the way, we stop for coffee in charming villages and depending on the time of year you go, you can smell and see the amazing display of lavender so commonly grown in this stunning region.

Today’s adventure is one that anyone reasonably fit can do.

It's a fantastic holiday where you can be active but not have to worry except about whether to indulge in another pastry or glass.  But since you HAVE been active - GO FOR IT:)

Trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal : An Adventure For Regular Hikers (who train!)

Looking for a superb challenge, surrounded by majestic beauty and a unique culture?  Consider trekking to Everest Base Camp(EBC)!

You hike on the same path as the folks who are attempting to climb Mount Everest, ending at EBC, the last village before their final climb.  It's also the one path that villagers and pack animals use to tranport goods up and down these Himalayan mountains, so you'll also get a fun cultural exchange as well!

Today, I interview Jack about his Active Adventures 18 day tour, which starts and ends in colorful Kathmandu in Nepal.  You then fly in to the exciting Lukla airport before beginning your trek.

Active allows for acclimatization days offering you the best chance of a successful hike up to Everest Base Camp at 17,598’/5364m.  You'll even have the option to climb even further later to the ridgetop of Kala Patthar at 18,208’/5550m for one of the most dramatic views in the world!  Cross the Hillary Bridge, named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first along with his porter, summited Mount Everest in 1953. Fly in and out of Lukla, one of the world's most exciting airports:)  Try a yak burger (and be sure to stand mountainside when they pass you by on the trail!).

We discuss all the important things you need to know before deciding if this is the trip for you. Be sure to visit the webpage for more details and pics. And get the FREE Everest Base Camp Travel Planner as well.

If it is, be sure to email me for an exclusive $200 Off Active Adventures Promo Code (they won't let me publish it).  You learn what to expect and pack, how to train, what you'll eat and where you'll sleep, how to deal with altitude and hygiene, and most importantly, what you'll see and experience!  This adventure is a combo of Type I and Type II Fun (learn what that means, too).

This hike, along with climbing Kilimanjaro, are the two most difficult adventure travel trips that will be covered on the Active Travel Adventures podcast, rated at a 5 out of 5.  BUT, both are doable for fit folks WHO TRAIN!

Be sure to check out the adventure travel training and the training for altitude shows we've done:

Guided Costa Rica Camino with Homestays and Daily Luggage Transfer

PART II: Join us as we continue our 175 mile/280 km Costa Rica Camino where, over 16 days, you walk from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean, across the entire country (indeed the continent and over the continental divide!).  You'll experience an array of ecosystems and see wildlife and fauna in one of the most biodiverse regions of the world.

The hike is fully guided and includes all meals and daily luggage transfer.  When I went, I did a combination of small lodges and camping.  Our guest Laurie and her husband opted for a private tour for the two of them and they stayed in homestays, for a completely different experience than the one I covered last year.

Less than 1000 hikers have completed the Costa Rica Camino as of this recording!  Learn all about it on the show and on the website and Travel Planner.  I recommend going with my affiliate, UrriTrek.  Use Promo Code ATA100 to save $100 on your full Costa Rica Camino.

Patagonia Part II: Hike, Bike and Kayak Argentina and Chile

In this Part II of our Patagonia adventure, we begin at the end of our W-Trek at Lake Grey, where we switch our hiking gear for sea kayaks, and venture out in this beautiful lake to kayak around icebergs and glaciers.

We then move to the other side of Patagonia, from Chile now on to Argentina, where we explore the stunning Perito Moreno glacier, and see the Fitz Roy massif at Glacier National Park.  We also get in some amazing biking to see more beautiful mountains and forests, plus several impoosibly blue and green glacial lakes.  We also check out some flamingo lagoons, and feast on traditional Argentinian fare.

A bucket List adventure to be sure!!!

Patagonia Part I: Hike the W Trek in Argentina

Patagonia ranks in my Top 3 of the ‘Most Beautiful Places’ I’ve seen (and I’ve been to 50 countries and all seven continents).  The rugged granite mountains are often snow capped in glaciers lit up by the sun.  Those same glaciers have turned its many lakes into stunning milky blue and teal oasis that defy description.

In Patagonia, you can hike one of most beautiful hikes in the world, the W-Trek including the French Valley and Grey Lake.  You can also sea kayak around the icebergs and glacier in Grey Lake.  On our trip, we also got in some amazing biking when we were over on the Argentinian side after we hiked and checked out the gorgeous Perito Moreno glacier.  We spent some time eating and exploring the fun gateway cities of Puerto Morales, Punta Arenas, El Chaltan, and El Calafate.

In this Part I, we hike the stunningly beautiful W-Trek in Chile [ 49.7 miles / 80 km · Total Elevation Gain: 8,956 ft / 2,730 ] over the course of four days, all the way to glacial Lake Grey. We stay in refugios, where we also get a hot and tasty breakfast and dinner each night.

Learn all about going on an adventure in Patagonia and by listening to today's show and visiting the website.  See why you will soon be adding Patagonia to your Bucket List!

The Grand Canyon is the United States' 15th national park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also considered one of the Great Wonders of the World. Ontario-based climber Mike Grainger talks about his experience whitewater rafting on the Colorado River. He also gets to hike on the trip, and shares how a hybrid trip allows for couples and families to participate in the same adventure at their own skill and comfort level. He says this trip is worth every penny as your adrenalin is sure to be racing going through the rapids.  This popular episode was first released in the fall of 2017.
