Do you want to know more about how cricket really works? Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast is a podcast which looks at the stats and data behind the game, helping you gain that expert knowledge. Dan Weston has almost a decade’s experience as an analyst in the game, and has worked with teams across the globe and has even sat with a team for an IPL auction. Joining him on the show is Jack Hope from The Cricket Podcast, who bring almost 500 episodes worth of experience to the show. Covering a new topic each week Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast entertains and informs. Whether you want to know more about IPL auction dynamics, or you’re interested in a deep dive into Bazball’s impact on Test cricket, we’ll break down the numbers to tell you the full story.
Three topics on this week's episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast. First up Dan Weston offers a response to Simon Doull, who this week claimed that all analysts who hadn't played the game were useless (paraphrasing slightly). Why is that wrong and why will that look even wronger in the near future?
Then we go through 8 ideas for rule changes to reduce run rates in T20 cricket. These include ideas around power plays, bowling limits, humidors, fielding restrictions and the impact sub. What would the impact on the game be?
Then in the second part we get to questions. These range from questions about the future of off-spin, through to how analytics works when we don't have perfect information.

On this episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast we talk about the imapct sub rule in the IPL. Impact subs were introduced to the IPL in 2023 and have changed how the game is played in the competition.
How has the rule been used by teams and could they improve on its usage? What has the impact sub rule done for batting strike rates? And will it have an impact on how India develops talent?

On this episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast we invited Paul Nixon to join us. Paul Nixon had a 23 year career as a pro, played for England, played a World Cup, then has gone on to be a successful coach (winning the CPL) and spending a number of years working with Dan at Leicestershire.
In the podcast we talk to Paul about his time working as a coach, covering how he works with analytics and brings data into his coaching style. We discuss his time with Leicestershire and what role he filled as Head Coach, as well as how that differs to his time as the coach of the Jamaica Tallawahs.
In a great conversation we get into detail about where analysis was able to supplement his role as a coach, with particular successes including the breakthrough of Rishi Patel and the recruitment of Naveen Ul-Haq before he played in the IPL.
What role did his analyst (Dan Weston himself!) play at Leicestershire? What does he do when players are resistant to using data? What were some of his successes based on data?

On this episode of STRIKE RATE: THE CRICKET ANALYTICS PODCAST we talk about the Chennai Super Kings. Why is it that CSK have been so successful for so many years in the IPL?
Key factors include the presence of the legend MS Dhoni during all of that time, their home stadium of the Chepauk, and better strategy than other franchises.
Jack and Dan discuss all of this as well as answering your questions on a deep dive episode into CSK.

On this episode of STRIKE RATE: THE CRICKET ANALYTICS PODCAST we talk about how important bowling is in T20 franchise cricket. The opening round of the IPL brutally exposed Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as their underinvestment in bowling came back to bite them against cleverer IPL opponents.
We talk about the key factors that go into this, how teams need to think about different combination of bowlers and set some benchmarks for what good looks like in the IPL and other franchise tournaments.
How does spin and seam factor into the equation? Are wickets or economy more important? Why is bowling more dependable than batting?

On this episode of STRIKE RATE: THE CRICKET ANALYTICS PODCAST we build an IPL dream team. Focussing on IPL performances from the last couple of years Jack and Dan take it in turns to go through and pick a god squad.
Will stars like Rohit Sharama and Virat Kohli make the cut... What about Jos Buttler? Or will things be dominated by the young guns like Shubman Gill and Jaiswal?

On this episode of Strike Rate: The Cricket Analytics Podcast we talk about how phase data has an impact on T20 batting stats. The discussion focusses on the powerplay, middle over and death periods of the game, and we get into how different batters should be valued differently depending on which phase they predominantly operate in. Again we use real world data to analyse how this works, with case studies including Rizwan and KL Rahul.
Then in parts 2 and 3 we get to your questions. These were wide ranging with us covering advanced stats such as: wins above replacement, runs above average, expected bowling average and other ways of modelling performance. Which of these exist, which of these would be possible to model and how do teams use these in practice?

On this episode of STRIKE RATE: THE CRICKET ANALYTICS PODCAST we discus all the key batting metrics in T20 cricket. In part 1 we cover some of the basic stats you will find on Cricinfo before the discussion branches out during the episode.
Is batting average a useful metric in T20s, or may we want to consider balls per dismissal?
How influential is a player's strike rate, and what other factors should you consider when looking at that number?
And which famous T20 batter is costing his team 1.5 runs before he has even faced 5 deliveries?
The examples Jack uses in the show are taken from a database of all major T20 competitions over the last 3 years, excluding international cricket. You can find most of this information on Cricmetric, or you can play around with the raw ball by ball data here (with thanks to Himanish!).
Jack also mentions a university paper he read on the podcast, if you want to have a read you can find that here.
