Jason and Frank are back with another edition of The DFO Rundown and as the first month of the NHL season comes to a close, the guys went around the league and talked about some teams that are really starting to heat up and one team in particular that appears to be heading towards a historically awful season.

Both the New York Rangers and Anaheim Ducks ripped through their recent road trips. The Rangers are making life easy for both Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick with how well they’re defending. Are they now firmly back in the Stanley Cup Contender category?

As for the Ducks, with new Head Coach Greg Cronin at the helm, they seem to be playing some pretty inspired hockey. Can they make a push for a playoff spot? Or is this nothing more than just an early-season heater? The guys debated that.

It is Halloween, so they also talked about their favourite candy, their holiday traditions, and then they talked about the spooky-bad start to the year for the San Jose Sharks. They look like a team that might struggle to win 20 games this season.

They also talked about the tragic passing of Adam Johnson and had a conversation about player safety at both the professional and minor hockey levels.

1:50 - Red hot Rangers

4:05 - Ducks sweep road trip

9:40 - Penguins struggles

14:20 - Historically terrible Sharks

22:40 - Crown Royal Generous Guy

32:10 - Fill in the Blank

Frank made the trek up to Edmonton for the Heritage Classic on Sunday and that means that we got to record today’s episode of the podcast in person. To start things off, he and Jason Gregor talked about the two teams in Alberta. Both the Oilers and Flames are hurting right now and in desperate need of a victory.

They also talked about how they plan on staying warm during the game on Sunday.

From there, they talked about the NHL’s final perfect team: the Vegas Golden Knights. Frank talked about the most impressive part of Vegas’ start. They also gave some love to a team in the Eastern Conference that might not be getting enough attention right now.

Frank also broke down the Shane Pinto situation. Why did the league go as hard as they did? Why didn’t the NHLPA appeal the decision? How will this affect the Senators when the suspension is done?

In Fill in the Blank, they talked about outdoor game memories and the chances that McDavid won’t win the scoring title this season.

2:55 - Struggles in Alberta

18:20 - Surprising records this season

22:55 - Long-term plans in Calgary

28:40 - Shane Pinto suspension

The Edmonton Oilers' miserable start to the season managed to get even worse on Saturday night as Connor McDavid went down during the team's loss to the Winnipeg Jets. The team announced that he will miss one to two weeks with an upper-body injury, meaning his chances of playing in the Heritage Classic next Sunday.

Jason and Frank started today’s episode of the podcast by breaking down the injury and talking about what’s been going wrong for the Oilers. Frank thinks McDavid will be back sooner than people think.

From there, they stayed in the Pacific Division and talked about the red-hot Vegas Golden Knights. Hangover? What hangover! The Golden Knights are the first defending Stanley Cup Champion to start the next season 6-0. They’re looking like an unstoppable force once again.

They also talked about some other big moments from the weekend, the Rasmus Andersson suspension, and the Detroit Red Wings hot start to the season.

1:04 - McDavid Goes Down

9:35 - Golden Knights Hot Start

11:55 - Red Wings Heater

22:43 - Crown Royal Generous Guy

The guys are back with a Thursday edition of The DFO Rundown and to start today’s show, they talked a little bit about the games we saw last night. The Detroit Red Wings are 3-1-0 to start the season and their offense has looked dominant. Are they capable of keeping this level up and making the playoffs?

Earlier in the week, Leon Draisaitl continued his dominance of the Nashville Predators. They guys talked about other players who have traditionally dominated certain clubs and some of the matchups were pretty surprising.

Draisaitl also set the Edmonton Oilers all-time record for powerplay goals and that led Gregor to do some research about who leads other franchises in powerplay markers. He quizzed Frank on a few interesting names.

The guys also debated whether or not Corey Perry is a Hall of Famer, if Ovi will hit 50 goals this season, Timo Meier’s tough start in New Jersey and if the Senators are capable of being a playoff team with a healthy Josh Norris.

6:00 - Individual dominance

8:40 - Dach’s injury

12:58 - Is Perry a Hall of Famer?

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. Coming off a full weekend of NHL hockey, the guys went through some of the biggest storylines that emerged from the last few days.

Nothing is getting more attention than Auston Matthews’ red-hot start. After back-to-back hat-tricks, the Maple Leafs’ star has a chance to make NHL history on Monday night if he can score a third consecutive hatty. What’s his limit for goals this season? The guys debated that.

They also went through some preseason overreactions before getting to the “Generous Guy of the Week” brought to you by Crown Royale where they talked about a heavyweight tilt in Toronto and a light-hearted moment in Columbus.

To wrap things up, they talked about the Vancouver Canucks impressive victories over the Edmonton Oilers and whether or not they’ll be able to ride this momentum to a playoff appearance this season.

The first 48 hours of the NHL season have not underwhelmed. We’ve gotten some pretty big moments on the ice as Connor Bedard made his debut and both Auston Matthews and Brock Boeser popped home an opening night hat tricks. There was a lot for Frank and Jason to get to off the jump today.

Once they worked their way through the big headlines in the league, they dug into the Atlantic Division and wrapped up their season previews.

To start, they took a look at the Montreal Canadiens. Frank thinks the Habs are going to be much improved this season and may not even finish last in the division. That team, according to the guys, could be the Detroit Red Wings.

The Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres are looking to end their playoff droughts this season but the vibes around the two are very different. The Sabres are locking up young pieces and are everyone's favourite playoff pick while the Senators are battling the salary cap ahead of opening night.

Will the Panthers miss? Are the Lightning still elite? How hard will the Bruins fall? Is this finally the year in Toronto? Frank and Jason answered those questions and more.

The offseason is over and meaningful hockey will be played this week. It’s an exciting time around the league with plenty of interesting roster moves going down over the weekend.

To kick off today’s pod, Jason and Frank covered the moves that we saw on the waiver wire Sunday afternoon and they dug into the big extension for Rasmus Dahlin. The Sabres are making Dahlin one of the top five highest-paid defensemen in the league, is it justified?

From there, they began their Central Division previews.

They started in Chicago, where the Connor Bedard era is set to begin tomorrow night. Will he provide enough of a spark to push the Hawks out of the Central Division? Can he hit the 100 point mark in his rookie season? The guys debated it.

The Arizona Coyotes have quickly become a sexy playoff pick for a lot of hockey fans, but Gregor thinks they’re getting overhyped. They also gave their thoughts on the Blues and Preds, who both missed the playoffs last season but really changed up their rosters over the summer.

Four teams in the Central made the playoffs last season and no one is more in danger of missing this season than the Winnipeg Jets. Frank says they needed to make more changes than they did and believes the playoffs are far-fetched.

They then got to the big guns. They talked about the potential for a bounce-back season in Colorado, debated if the Stars are legit Cup contenders, and wondered if the Wild are good enough to compete with the big dogs in the Western Conference.

0:55 - Rasmus Dahlin extension

6:45 - Roster moves & waiver updates

16:20 - Chicago Blackhawks

23:55 - Arizona Coyotes

28:58 - St. Louis Blues

35:25 - Nashville Predators

47:00 - Winnipeg Jets

Frank and Jason are continuing on with their season previews as we are officially under a week away from the start of the NHL Season. Today, they focused on the Metropolitan Division.

Before they got into that though, Frank emptied his notebook after being at the NHL Board of Governors meeting. A lot of people noticed that Gary Bettman seems pretty certain that the salary cap will rise to at least $87 million next summer. That news is significant, but Frank was more interested in what the Commissioner had to say about potential expansion.

Gregor pushed back on the idea a little bit, saying that it would weaken the talent pool. Frank also pushed back on the idea of Atlanta being a potential destination.

From there, they dug into the metro and started with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team was riddled with injuries last season and while some there was some optimism around the team heading into the season, the Mike Babcock drama has overshadowed that.

Neither Frank or Jason gave the Flyers or Blue Jackets much of a chance to make the playoffs. They did leave the window open for both the Capitals and Penguins to make a return to the big dance after missing in 2022-23.

After a fresh edition of Buy or Sell, they dug into the teams that did make the playoffs last season.

The Islanders seem ripe for a step back and Frank thinks that the Rangers may be in a similar positon. The final two teams they talked about, the Devils and Hurricanes, both seem like a legitimate Stanley Cup Contenders.

1:10 - Board of Governors notebook (salary cap, expansion)

10:05 - Columbus Blue Jackets

13:10 - Philadelphia Flyers

19:10 - Washington Capitals

25:20 - Pittsburgh Penguins

34:30 - Buy or Sell

42:00 - New York Islanders

49:30 - New York Rangers

57:55 - New Jersey Devils

1:01:05 - Carolina Hurricanes

The calendar has flipped to October and that means hockey season is just around the corner. In fact, we are less than ten days away from the start of the NHL regular season and with that in mind, Jason and Frank decided to kick off their season previews on today’s episode of the podcast.

With the Vegas Golden Knights coming into the year as defending Stanley Cup Champions, the guys figured it’d be fitting to preview the Pacific Division first.

They started at the bottom of the division, where both the Sharks and Ducks finished last season. Do either of them have a chance to make a big jump up the standings this season?

From there, they went up north to talk about two of the Western Canadian teams that missed the playoffs last season. Frank thinks that there’s a legit chance that both of these teams find a way to get back to the postseason this year while Gregor shared some concerns he has with both of their rosters.

To break things up a little bit, Tyler jumped in for a Pacific Division-themed edition of Fill in The Blank, brought to you by Betano.

In the back half of the pod, they talked about the teams in the division that did make the playoffs last year. Frank shared his pick for who’s going to miss the playoffs out of that group and they also debated if the eventual Stanley Cup Champion could come out of the Pacific Division. It feels like all three of the Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Los Angeles Kings have a real chance to do it.

4:15 - San Jose Sharks

9:46 - Anaheim Ducks

13:50 - Vancouver Canucks

26:30 - Calgary Flames

38:15 - Seattle Kraken

54:00 - Los Angeles Kings

1:01:30 - Edmonton Oilers

1:08:10 - Vegas Golden Knights
