Get a taste for Sichuan and its culture and dialects as we kick off a series of episodes on this southwestern behemoth of a province which is geographically isolated, historically significant, and utterly fascinating.  Part one is an engaging interview with three natives--all hailing from different regions but also all currently living in Chengdu.  The interview is conducted by 7岁 amateur reporter 果果, with some sweet 四川话 BGM provided by 衣湿乐队，罗先举，and J-Chill. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more awesome Sichuan-related content!

方言科普 DIALECT BREAKDOWN

  • gua: 这个饭（gua）好吃。有一点、挺。这个形容词是四川巴中人日常口语中必不可少的部分。How you can say "a bit" in Bazhong.
  • 抵拢导拐: 走到尽头转弯（指路）。有人向四川人问路时，当地人总会用这句话来给别人指路。Used when giving directions.
  • 啥（sa）子: 什么。当人听别人说话，没听懂时，就会说“啥子安？”意思就是你说的什么呀，可以再说一遍吗？Huh? What?
  • 客猫儿: 青蛙。Frog.
  • 雀善儿: 蚯蚓。当地人钓鱼需要诱饵时，就喜欢说“挖雀善儿”，意思就是用锄头在地里挖出蚯蚓来作为钓鱼的诱饵。Earthworm.
  • 麻麻得儿: 蜻蜓。当地人常说“麻麻得儿飞得矮，要落雨”，意思就是看到天上有成群的蜻蜓飞的很低时，就表示要下雨了，提醒人们赶紧回家，收衣服，收晾晒的农作物等。Dragonfly.
  • 苍蚊儿: 苍蝇。Housefly.
  • 割（ga）儿: 猪肉。当地长辈喜欢对自己家的小孩说“你一天到黑就想都吃割儿”，意思就是你每天就想着吃肉，离开了肉，这日子就没法过了。This one is definitely the most impossible to guess: Pork!
  • 堂客: 老婆 Term of endearment for your serious girlfriend or wife.
  • 你这回子涮得烦哦: 你这次遇到麻烦了，环境很糟糕，摊上事了。Dang, that's rough.
  • 打闷（巴中话）: 程度加强，相当于一个副词。例：你打闷搞快点（你赶紧/抓紧快点）Intensifier.
  • 巴适得拌（ban）: 巴适，舒服；拌（动词），一种兴奋得打滚的动作。通俗来讲就是十分舒服；舒服得很 For when you're feelin' it.

欢迎收听面包吐思《等我音乐》。我是江南大学睫毛最长的外教面包老师。这一期节目的英语开场白短一点吧，因为我们江南大学的学生英语都贼好，没什么必要给你们练听力了。我也知道你们不是来听我胡说的，而只想听亲爱的邓泽西的故事。

易开and I are excited to introduce to you Jersey Deng. Today’s conversation covers several aspects of her rise to “Internet red” status (网红), focusing mainly of course on her hit song: “i really lost a friend.” We’ll play the song in its entirety after the interview is over.

17 Words and Phrases that Brad Likes and/or Has Something to Say About:

  1. 网易云音乐 [ wǎng yì yún yīn yuè ] – NetEase Music music streaming service.  Jersey’s (and Brad’s) platform of choice and the best place to find her songs (China Only)
  2. B站 / 哔哩哔哩 [ B zhàn / bì lī bì lī ] – Video sharing/viewing site. Bilibili is your best bet to access Jersey’s stuff outside of  China.  Its users are predominately 20-somethings and teens, and it is a HUGE video-sharing site that started off as a place to watch anime but has really blown up into a social network entity and cultural phenomenon of its own the past couple years.  I (Brad) had to cheat heavily on this ridiculous B 站 slang and trends gauntlet of a quiz they make you go through in order to register an account which allows you to comment.  Seriously, go try to register and see how well you do. It’s like 50 questions and I think I could’ve gotten about two of them write without help.
  3. 弹舌 / 颤舌 [ tán shé / chàn shé ] – tongue rolling/vibrating. Jersey first called it 弹舌, then someone corrected her and told her it should be 颤舌。Who knows?
  4. Up主 [ zhǔ ] – Basically the equivalent of a “YouTuber.” You become an up主in your field/topic area when you become popular. Just one of hundreds of terms that have risen together with Bilibili.
  5. 快乐源泉 [ kuài lè yuán quán ] – source of happiness. A trending internet phrase often used thusly: “这是我的快乐源泉” - "this is my source of happiness.”
  6. 精通 [ jīng tōng ] - to master (a subject); to be proficient in
  7. 一段感情的结束 [ yī duàn gǎn qíng de jié shù ] – the end of a relationship. Or literally: the end of a period of feelings.
  8. 交心 [ jiāo xīn ] - lay one's heart bear
  9. 突发奇想 [ tū fā qí xiǎng ] - suddenly be inspired to do something; suddenly have a thought (idiom). 形容突然想出一个非常奇怪的想法。
  10. 潜移默化 [ qián yí mò huà ] - to influence secretly; imperceptible influence (idiom). 指人的思想、性格在不知不觉中受到感染、影响而发生变化。
  11. 引起共鸣 [ yǐn qǐ gòng míng ] – to resonate or evoke sympathy. Jersey says 引起他人的共鸣。Don’t know why, I just like this.
  12. 挺菜的 [ tǐng cài de ] – “very vegetable”... is what I’ve seen university-aged peeps say online as a joke.  At least I hope they are joking and realize that the direct translation of this trendy phrase doesn’t carry the same meaning.  It just means terrible, weak sauce, low-level, etc.
  13. 意识流 [ yì shí liú ] – stream of consciousness.
  14. 网上冲浪 [wǎng shǎng chōng làng] - surfing the internet. It makes me happy when we’re all cool with sharing new(ish) terminology.
  15. 垫脚石 [ diàn jiǎo shí ] - fig. person used to advance one's career; stepping stone
  16. 里程碑 [ lǐ chéng bēi ] - milestone; proud achievement
  17. 厚重感 [ hòu zhòng gǎn ] – heaviness; somber feeling

跟着元培一期读 FOLLOW ALONG WITH YUANPEI (4:19开始)

谈性色变？我们需要正视性教育

鲁迅先生曾经这么评价过国人：“一见短袖子，立刻想到白臂膊，立刻想到全裸体，立刻想到生殖器，立刻想到性交，立刻想到杂交，立刻想到私生子，中国人的想像惟在这一层能够如此跃进。”

而一百年过去了，国人的性观念似乎也没有多大进步。

今天是2020年二月的最后一天，和大家说一说“性”吧。

这两天追完了一部剧，《Sex Education》。

这部剧的故事围绕着一所中学展开，在校学生奥蒂斯在校内开设了一间性诊所，与自己的搭档一起为同学们对于性方面的困惑，答疑解惑。

很早就听说过这部剧，在豆瓣上查了一下评分，居然有9.1分之高。

一部剧名带“性”的剧，评分也能这么高？带着好奇，我走进这部剧中一探究竟。

这部剧尺度很大，但并不是所谓的色情片。

剧中更多的情结是关于通过对自身的了解，去学习如何更健康的爱自己和对待他人。

故事不仅讲述了男女之间的性关系，同样也演绎了各类性少数者（同性恋、泛性恋、无性恋等人群）他们面临的困惑。

充分的表达出一个观点：尊重每一种存在。这与我之前写的《从女性权益问题，对人类未来发展方向的思考》一文的观点不谋而合。

剧中有一个片段：老师将几个女孩关在一间教室，让她们找到女性的共同点。经过很长一段时间的讨论，女孩们发现虽然大家都是女性，但秉性和喜好各不相同，最终的结论是，谁说女性就一定要有确切的共同点了。

然而在讨论中，她们找到了相似的经历：性骚扰。

女孩们都因为一定程度上的“性骚扰”，受到的不只是身体的伤害，而更多的是心理上的阴影。除了女主比较勇敢强硬，其他女孩都不得不因为自己的经历，而改变自己的行为，从而避免伤害。

但是你选择逃避，最终伤害的人只能是你自己。

美国的一所研究机构曾做过一项统计：如果不提前做好性教育，美国每年出生的50万婴儿，在成年之前会被性侵，而且，受侵犯的孩子平均年龄为9岁。

2017年，全球约有1500万15到19岁的青春期女性曾被性侵，在这些受害者中，只有1%的人表示他们曾寻求过专业帮助。

我们身边，不乏有女性朋友有过或大或小的性侵经历，小到“尾随”，大则是“强奸”。

近几年来，我们也常看到小朋友被猥亵、侵犯的新闻。我们在责备、唾弃犯罪分子无耻下流的同时，应该考虑到这背后的教育问题。我们一直以来在性教育方面都没有足够的重视，但是越来越多的事实告诉着我们性教育存在的必要性。

中国性教育现状是怎么样的

我在知网上通过主题搜索“中国性教育现状”。

结果关于性教育的文章寥寥无几。

“性教育”不仅对多数中国家长来说是一个非常特别的话题, 目前学术界对于性教育的研究也比较有限。

性教育在中国，最早提出是在 1958 年，周总理就提出来要搞性教育。

但作为95后的我，在整个上学期间，除了生物课，我从来没有在学校课程中学到过任何与性有关的知识。

电影《嘉年华》中有这么一个场景，十二岁的小文和新新被当地的一位官员刘会长带着入住宾馆，并遭受到了性侵。事后，家长带着两个小姑娘去医院进行伤口检查。

新新在做完身体检查后，跑到小文身边，一脸天真无邪地问了一句悄悄话：“小文，你知道他们说的处女膜是什么吗？”

被性侵伤害之后，受害者连性侵是什么、到底怎么就发生了都不知道，这才是最令人心寒和悲哀的。

在这背后，是我们性教育的严重缺位。本该从幼儿园、小学就做正确引导的性教育，永远都在迟到。

人们观念中对于“性”的习惯性隐藏，也让性教育的推行与普及举步维艰。

没有普及正经的性教育课本，孩子们该如何学习性知识呢？除了在岛国的爱情动作电影和网络上流传的黄色小读本中窥探成人的世界，又有谁来给他们讲解心中的困惑，满足他们的好奇心？

但这样学来的性知识，也都是片面而扭曲的。

在本世纪初，东北引进了一批北欧的性教育课程。校方号称使用了这套教程的结果是：百分之百地避免少女怀孕。

如果真是这样，这就是比较合格的性教育了。

小时候，偶尔会听到这样的消息，某学校女学生怀孕，遭校方开除。

我还看到有这样一个报道，一个大学生宫外孕。宫外孕后，性行为就暴露了，然后学校就要开除她。

后来家长非常抗议，说孩子考上一个大学是多么难，你要是因为这个事把她开除，简直就是要改变她一生的命运。

现在想起来，这类事简直是非常的奇怪。

我国性学研究专家方刚曾指出，“性教育要从0岁开始，父母亲密关系的实践、原生家庭的状态对孩子就是一种言传身教的性教育。”

性教育中的四大误区

1.认为“性教育”就是指“性行为”“性器官”的教育

大家提到性教育，往往首先想到的就是性行为和性器官。许多家长觉得这是难以启齿的事情，甚至有些家长认为这是龌龊的事情。

对“性”的认知里确实包括“性行为”和“性器官”, 但这些只是性教育里面的一个组成部分,而不是全部, 即便是性教育里关于性行为的部分也不是谈性技巧的,而重点是引导孩子如何看待性行为、作出正确的决策以及如何保护自己。

除此之外，性教育中包括的还有两性关系、人际关系和对性的正确价值观。

如何与异性相处、如何认识两性关系其实都是“性”这个集合概念的重要组成部分。如果家长能从这个高度理解“性”, 那么与孩子谈性时应该不会再色变了, 也不会觉得性教育是可有可无了。

2.认为性教育就是青春期教育

长期以来, 性教育的唯一开放窗口就是青春期教育, 即便是青春期教育也不叫性教育而被称为生理卫生教育。青春期时期，因为同学们的身体变化，家长们会给出他们适当的教育指导，但大部分也只是针对女孩子。

除此之外，这一时期性教育的另一个重点则是：预防早恋。而在这方面，很大一部分家庭选择的方式则是：打压政策。

3.认为性教育会诱发性行为

有些家长认为，性无知就是性纯洁，其实，性无知只能演变成性愚昧。孩子们更多选择通过网络或同伴来获取与性相关的信息。这其实更增加了他们接收不良性知识、性信息甚至错误两性关系的风险和概率, 这不仅可能会使孩子未来的爱情或婚姻不健康，甚至可能造成伤害自己或他人的行为。

4.认为性教育等于教育女孩防性侵

在性侵报道中，确实多说是女孩受到伤害，但其实也不乏男孩受到性侵犯的事件。尽管女孩更容易受到性侵，对男孩的性教育也不容忽视。

有一些人可笑地认为, 女生被侵害不怪性侵行为的施暴者, 而在于女生自己,是女生自己的着装或行为不当诱发了施暴者的侵犯行为。这种奇怪的逻辑并无任何科学研究的数据支持, 而只是来源于凭主观假设。

事实上已有的数据显示, 施暴者在选择受害者时的两个关键点分别是，是否有机会和目标是否易顺从。一般穿着比较保守的人,更容易被打上“易顺从”的标签, 但衣着暴露的人会被认为“更主动,具有统治力”而不会被列入受害者名单。也就是说对于性侵害而言, 衣着暴露与成为目标并无直接关系。

结语

大多数家长对家庭性教育的种种观点其实是错误的。

这些错误一方面是长久以来形成的对性的看法所导致的，比如“女孩儿穿的暴露容易遭到侵犯”、“性不应该拿出来说”，另一方面，也说明他们没有受到过科学的性教育。

正是这些不恰当的也不科学的认知，导致我们缺乏正确的性教育，受到侵害的人不得不因为自己的经历，而改变自己的行为，从而避免伤害。

我们必须从观念和理念上重新理解“性”和“性教育”, 才能得到更健康的社会关系，每个人才能得到真正的健康自由。

  • What about 声调 tones? Pretty simple, really:  4 → 1；1 → 4
  • Mix up your n’s and l’s liberally.  ‘N’ / ‘L’不分
  • 尾音是扬的，也有点拖音

说南京话要有态度和姿势 Required Attitude and Body Language

  • Gotta be 甩 shuai! 讲话有点二五郎当。So, what’s 二五郎当?
  • Don’t forget, your head should be tilted back and 昂昂的 – 仰着头跟别人说话
  • Channel your inner 不鸟你 /不在乎你 attitude

  • 回宁要到南京南站 – focus on messing up your l’s and n’s and 1st and 4th tones
  • 啊 - 语气助词；疑问句 - Just say ‘ah’ a lot, people. You’re practically local already!
    • 啊要辣油？
    • 啊吃过啦？
    • 啊是啊？
    • 啊地铁票啊漂亮不？
    • 啊漂亮？
    • 啊紫 – 南京地铁4号线外号啊去过啊？

  • 白 -不发 bai。就发 buh-,快速- When you say 南京白局, you basically want to remove the vowels from 白 and 局。
  • 多大事 – 没有多大关系 – It’s no biggie. The 事 just becomes a quick little hiss.
  • Here’s a quick transcript of everything 彬彬 says at 35:12:
    • 你你你你，什么意思啊你，你干么事啊，你还想吵架啊你，我跟你讲你当心点个哦，你想怎样啊，你想干什么事啊，哪个怕哪个啊

  • 的一米 – 表示程度 - This is definitely Brad’s favorite of all the 南京话 stuff. Use this anywhere to emphasize.  Instead of saying 你非常帅，you say: 你帅的一米。
  • 摆（很牛） & 来私（厉害）- More stuff that just means awesome/amazing.

  • 顺其自然[ shùn qí zì rán ] - to let nature take its course (idiom). 指顺应事物的自然发展，不人为去干涉。
  • 六朝古都 [ liù cháo gǔ dū ] - Six Dynasties ancient capitals.
  • 势力范围 [ shì lì fàn wéi ] - sphere of influence
  • 百家争鸣 [ bǎi jiā zhēng míng ] - a hundred schools of thought contend (idiom); refers to the classical philosophic schools of the Warring States period 475-221 BC. 指战国时期学术思想领域“百家”林立、互相争辩的现象。
  • 淋漓尽致 [ lín lí jìn zhì ] - lit. extreme saturation (idiom); (of aperformance) brilliant; in great detail; fig. vividly and thoroughly; withoutrestraint. 形容文章、谈话表达得十分透彻，充分。也形容暴露得彻底：此文把反动派的嘴脸刻画得～。
  • 原汁原味 [ yuán zhī yuán wèi ] – original.
  • 田园风格 [ tián yuán fēng gé ] – pastoral/rural/country style
  • 精神内核 [ jīng shén nèi hé ] – spiritual core
  • 吃喝拉撒（睡）[ chī hē lā sā (shuì) ] – to eat, drink, poo,pee, and sleep; (fig.) the ordinary daily routine (Hanping Dictionary)
  • 不合时宜 [ bù hé shí yí ] - be incompatible with present needs; untimely. (idiom)时宜：当时的需要和潮流。不适合时代形势的需要。也指不合世俗习尚。
  • 夸大其词 [ kuā dà qí cí ] - to exaggerate (idiom). 说话或写文章不切实际，扩大了事实。也作夸大其辞。

4) 语言学习材料 Language Learning Materials

13 Words and Phrases that Brad Likes and/or Has Something to Say About:

  1. 画面感[ huàmiàn gǎn ] – visual sense; imagery. I just think this is a great term.  Apparently易开does, too, because he uses it frequently (possibly because he’s a designer?).
  2. 权威性[ quán wēi xìng ] - authoritative; (having) authority. Effective way to describe someone who has earned the respect of peers in a given field.
  3. 脑海[ nǎo hǎi ] - the brain; the mind. Pretty much always used with 里attached at the end.  ‘Brain sea’ just does so much more for me than “the mind.”
  4. 各奔东西[ gè bèn dōng xī ] – to go separate ways (idiom); to part ways with sb (Hanping). Not enough 4 字 idioms to have a separate section for this episode, but didn’t want to miss this.
  5. 拜师[ bài shī ] - to formally become an apprentice to a master. Note that 易开 says “拜个师,” cause Chinese is cool.
  6. 死磕[ sǐ kē ] - (coll.) to fight to the death. Speaking of Chinese being cool, this absolutely qualifies as boss-level vocabulary.
  7. 事半功倍[ shì bàn gōng bèi ] - get twice the result with half the effort. Solid 4 字stuff.
  8. 老天爷 [ lǎo tiān yé ] – God; Heavens. 张雨童 says singing ability is老天爷给的.
  9. 我还可以呀[ wǒ háikěyǐ ya ] – I’m not bad. Obviously, this isn’t high level stuff. It’s worth it though to note 易开‘s usage and tone, because that exact way of saying it is very much a “thing.”
  10. 沉淀[ chén diàn ] - to precipitate (solid sediment out of a solution); to settle. 几年的沉淀is a cool way for 张雨童to set up the idea that his song slowly precipitated and rested on his mind and soul for several years before he finally and suddenly had some inspiration and got it just right.
  11. 传说中的[ chuán shuō zhòng de ] – Legendary. You should use this.
  12. 懵逼了[ měng bī le ] – stupid. To (kind of) literally have ignorance/stupidity forced upon you or to force it upon others. Not technically a dirty word but it’s not exactly polite language.  Avoid saying this around grandma.
  13. 小白[ xiǎo bái ] - fool; idiot; abbr. for 小白脸, pretty boy; (slang) novice; greenhorn. I’ve never really heard it used in an insulting way.It’s usually meant to be more cute/welcoming. I’m not a gamer though so I’m not sure if it goes in another direction in that sphere.

Get these words down if you want to sing like 张雨童:

  • 和声[ hé shēng ] – harmony (music)
  • 断句[ duàn jù ] - to punctuate; to pause at appropriate points in reading aloud unpunctuated writing (and in singing)
  • 曲调[ qǔ diào ] - melody; tune
  • 哼哼[ hēng hēng ] – to hum
  • 声乐[ shēng yuè ] – vocal music
  • 真声[ zhēn shēng ] - natural voice; opposite:falsetto 假声; true voice; modal voice
  • 混声[ hùn sheng ] mixed voice
  • 气息[ qì xī ] - breath; odor; smell; flavor
  • 音域[ yīn yù ] - compass; range; register
  • 通透[ tōng tòu ] - penetrating
  • 美妙[ měi miào ] - beautiful; wonderful; splendid
  • 音色[ yīn sè ] - timbre; tone colour
  • 唱串了[ chàng chuàn le ] – to lose one’s place while singing

Eleven Words and Phrases that Brad Likes and/or Has Something to Say About:

  • 选择困难症 [ xuǎn zé kùn nán zhèng ] – indecision disorder; unable to decide. 症means disease both formally and informally. The way 磊子哥 uses it is definitely the latter.
  • 得了 [ dé le ] - all right!; that's enough! Notice that 磊子哥 says this with a heavy 北京话accent and kind of claims it’s a Beijing thing.  Who knows if it actually started there?  Maybe, but it is somewhat universally used, too.
  • 变形计 [ biàn xíng jì ] – Popular Mango TV/湖南卫视 reality show which had students from cities and the countryside trade places for a week.  If you’re REALLY bored, you can search for 《变形计第七季》 阔少酿火灾不知悔改 on v.qq.com （腾讯视频）. I show up at about 27 and 33 minutes.  So awkward but it was fun.  That kid is awesome, and I’m bummed that the phone number I have for him doesn’t work anymore.  I’d love to see how he’s doing. 有没有人认识他呢？哈哈，唉！
  • 无所谓先后 [ wú suǒ wèi xiān hòu ] – it’s all good one after the other/sooner or later.This isn’t a set phrase, but I just like how 磊子哥 says it.
  • 非物质文化遗产 [fēi wù zhì wén huà yí chǎn] - intangible cultural heritage. Boss-level vocab. Fun to say.
  • 猛得一想 [ měng de yī xiǎng ] - have something suddenly come to mind.
  • 北京范儿 [ Běi jīng fàn er ] – Beijing style. 范儿 is one of my favorite 儿化音s (don’t pronounce the ‘n’).
  • 真本事 [ zhēn běnshì ] – true ability. 本事 also means original story/source material. 真本事 is like the real deal.  Legit.  What the bee’s knees has.
  • 的哥 [ dí ɡē ] – cabby. Another one of these terms that Beijingers claim as their own. 磊子哥 mentioned to me that all these new phrases like 快递小哥 and whatnot all owe their existence to Beijingers first saying 的哥.
  • 洞察力 [ dòng chá lì ] – insight. More boss-level vocab. 洞察 means to see clearly.
  • 混蹦乱跳 [ hùn bèng luàn tiào ] – jump around. Another hilarious thing to hear 磊子哥say which isn’t an actual proverb or anything.

Four 字 Stuff

  • 零零总总 [ líng líng zǒng zǒng ] – total zero
  • 七老八十 [ qī lǎo bā shí ] - in one's seventies. 七八十岁，指年纪很老：别看他～的，身体硬朗着呢。
  • 毫不犹豫 [ háo bù yóu yù ] - without the slightest hesitation. 毫：一点儿；犹豫：迟疑，拿不定主意。
  • 一片空白 [ yī piàn kòng bái ] – totally blank space.
  • 无欲无求 [ wú yù wú qiú ] - No desire, no demand. 无欲，不对任何事、物抱很大的希望，甚至不抱希望，走到哪儿算到哪儿，不被环境所左右。
  • 老泪横流 [ lǎo lèi héng liú ] - be in tears. 老人泪流满面，形容极度悲伤或激动。
  • 头脑风暴 [tóu nǎo fēng bào] - brainstorm
  • 性情中人 [ xìng qíng zhōng rén ] - A man of nature; full of emotion. 感情丰富，率性而为的人。常常用来形容一个人随其本性、情感外露、率性而为。也有爽快大方的意思在里面。
  • 历朝历代 [ lì cháo lì dài ] - successive dynasties; past dynasties; successive reigns of a dynasty
  • 阴差阳错/阴错阳差 [ yīn chā yáng cuò/ yīn cuò yáng chā ] - an accident arising from many causes (idiom); a freak combination of factors. 比喻由于偶然因素而造成了差错。也说阴差阳错。
  • 命中注定 [ mìng zhōng zhù dìng ] - decreed by fate (idiom); destined; fated. 迷信的人认为人的一切遭遇都是命运预先决定的，人力无法挽回。
