Rock and Roll continues to thrive in Memphis and is the dominant genre for many Memphians, particularly those living in Midtown Memphis. Gonerfest has been held every September since 2004. Midtown has two great record stores - Goner Records and Shangri-la Records and a host of noted studios that include Ardent, Sam Phillips and Sun. Many of our artists record in home studios.
Mike McCarthy, a notorious filmmaker, sculptor and musician, has been an observer and participant in the Memphis garage/punk scene since the early 1990’s. In 2023, our label began this podcast series where Mike interviews musicians and observers of Rock and Roll. The club/venue scene, past (Antenna, Barristers, Buccaneer, etc.) and present (HiTone, Lamplighter, Railgarten, B-side, etc.), features prominently in many of the podcasts.
